Champion Returns to Aitkin
Champion, a coin-operated ride, was born in 1905 and spent most of his life in front of the Ben Franklin store in Aitkin, MN. He was a fixture from the mid 30's to January 28th, 2006 when he rode off into the sunset for the last time - or so it seemed. And did not stop until he reached the veterinarians's office that would be his home in Sparta, Wisconsin.
He arrived at the Depot Museum on June 25th, 2011 after a five and a half year absence. He was donated to Aitkin County Historical Society by Dr. Jill Stebbins and Dr. Mark Hemmerich and their four children Caitlin, Sarah, Celia and Natalie in remembrance of and in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Betty Stebbins and Mr. and Mrs Howard and Olga Smith, Jr. who were long-time owners and operators of the Ben Franklin, an Aitkin Landmark for decades. In 2011, All-Class Reunion attendees enjoyed seeing Champion again, and many a tot took a ride on him.
